چکیده

We explore the connection between public-coin interactive proof systems with logspace veriiers and NC using two diierent approaches. In the rst approach, we describe an interactive proof system for accepting any language in NC after a logspace reduction, where the veriier is logspace-bounded and the protocol requires polylog time. These results are proved by describing NC computations as computations over arithmetic circuits using maximum and average gates, and then translating the arithmetic circuits into interactive proof systems in a natural way. In the second approach, we give a characterization of NC in terms of interactive proof systems where the veriier is logspace-bounded and runs in polylog time. The equivalent interactive proof systems work with error-correcting encodings of inputs, using the polylogarithmically check-able codes introduced in the context of transparent proofs. We also characterize NP and PSPACE via public-coin interactive proof systems where the veriier is logspace-bounded, but has restricted access to auxiliary storage.

Approximating Satisfiable Satisfiability Problems (Extended Abstract)

We study the approximability of the Maximum Satissability Problem (Max SAT) and of the boolean k-ary Constraint Satisfaction Problem (Max kCSP) restricted to satissable instances. For both problems we improve on the performance ratios of known algorithms for the unrestricted case. Our approximation for satissable MAX 3CSP instances is better than any possible approximation for the unrestricted ...

Deterministic and Randomized Bounded Truth-Table Reductions of P, NL, and L to Sparse Sets

We prove that there is no sparse hard set for P under logspace computable bounded truth-table reductions unless P=L. In case of reductions computable in NC, the collapse goes down to P=NC. We parameterize this result and obtain a generic theorem allowing us to vary the sparseness condition, the space bound and the number of queries of the truth-table reduction. Another instantiation yields that...

The Complexity of Monotone Hybrid Logics over Linear Frames and the Natural Numbers

Hybrid logic with binders is an expressive specification language. Its satisfiability problem is undecidable in general. If frames are restricted to N or general linear orders, then satisfiability is known to be decidable, but of non-elementary complexity. In this paper, we consider monotone hybrid logics (i.e., the Boolean connectives are conjunction and disjunction only) over N and general li...

On Signature Schemes with Threshold Veriication Detecting Malicious Veriiers on Signature Schemes with Threshold Veriication Detecting Malicious Veriiers

While in the ordinary digital signature model one veriier is suucient to check the validity of a given signature, there are situations in which only t out of a group of n veriiers should be able to verify the signatures. These veriiers can either be anonymous, non-anonymous or convertible non-anonymous. So far, only schemes for the anonymous shared veriication signature concept have been sugges...

Reducing P to a Sparse Set using a Constant Number of Queries Collapses P to L

We prove that there is no sparse hard set for P under logspace computable bounded truth-table reductions unless P = L. In case of reductions computable in NC 1 , the collapse goes down to P = NC 1. We generalize this result by parameterizing the sparseness condition, the space bound and the number of queries of the reduction, apply the proof technique to NL and L, and extend all these theorems ...
